چکیده

INTRODUCTION Muscle pain in the shoulder/neck area and the upper extremities is a common and increasing problem among computer workers (Öberg and Åström, 2000). Hägg (1991) formulated the “Cinderella” hypothesis, proposing that the pain is caused by an overuse of low-threshold motor units (MUs). While this hypothesis is supported by laboratory studies that showed continuous activity of single MUs during e.g. long-term (60-minute) static contractions (Thorn et al., 2002), MU substitution (a shift from previously active MUs to newly recruited ones) has also been observed. It is unknown if the MU behaviour in an experiment more similar to long-term computer work may differ from that during a solely static muscle contraction. The purpose of this study was to investigate MU firing patterns in the trapezius muscle during a long-term computer work task. Specifically, are MUs continuously active during such work?

Motor unit firing patterns in light manual work

Work related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) in the shoulder/neck area and the upper extremities are a common problem among computer operators, especially women. A frequent type of WMSDs in the shoulder/neck area, which also may exist in the upper extremities, is chronic muscle pain (myalgia). The mechanisms for the development (etiology) of myalgia in the shoulder/neck area and in the upper ...

Motor control of low-threshold motor units in the human trapezius muscle.

The firing pattern of low-threshold motor units was examined in the human trapezius and first dorsal interosseous (FDI) muscles during slowly augmenting, low-amplitude contractions that were intended to mimic contractile activity in postural muscles. The motor unit activity was detected with a special needle electrode and was analyzed with the assistance of computer algorithms. The surface elec...

Single motor unit firing behavior in the right trapezius muscle during rapid movement of right or left index finger

BACKGROUND Computer work is associated with low level sustained activity in the trapezius muscle that may cause development of trapezius myalgia. Such a low level activity may be attention related or alternatively, be part of a general multi joint motor program providing stabilization of the shoulder joint as a biomechanical prerequisite for precise finger manipulation. This study examines sing...

Low-amplitude trapezius activity in work and leisure and the relation to shoulder and neck pain.

The aim of this study is to obtain evidence supporting or negating the hypothesis that muscle pain is associated with sustained activation of low-threshold motor units. Long-term surface electromyographic (EMG) recordings of trapezius activity pattern were related to subjectively reported shoulder and neck pain in work and leisure. Recordings from 118 female subjects (73 recorded both during wo...

Low-frequency oscillations (<0.3 Hz) in the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the human trapezius muscle during sleep.

The surface electromyographic (EMG) signal from right and left trapezius muscles and the heart rate were recorded over 24 h in 27 healthy female subjects. The root-mean-square (RMS) value of the surface EMG signals and the heartbeat interval time series were calculated with a time resolution of 0.2 s. The EMG activity during sleep showed long periods with stable mean amplitude, modulated by rhy...
